One of the most common questions I get asked is how to make money blogging. The thought of making a living working from home and blogging is a dream for many people. Is it possible? Absolutely! In fact, I used to work full time at a law firm before I began my blogging journey in 2011. I would work all day at the firm and then come home and work on my blog. Blogging was just my side hustle until I started making more money than my yearly salary at the firm. That was when I knew if was time to quit the firm and work for myself. This can happen for you as well! Figuring out how to make money from your blog can be hard at first. But, the good news is that you have me to break it all down for you and share what I’ve learned.
How to Make Money Blogging
To make money blogging, you first need to know how to start a blog. Once you get your blog up and running, you need to consistently post high quality content on your blog. High quality content will bring traffic and customers to your blog. Once you’re consistently posting content on your blog and getting traffic, you’re ready to monetize your blog and start making a pay check.
This page contains affiliate links meaning we earn a commission if you use the links and make a purchase. This commission is at no additional cost to you. As always, we only recommend brands we use and trust.
How Long it Takes to Make Money Blogging
The amount of time it takes to start making money blogging varies. It really depends on how often you are posting and how much traffic you are getting. Posting high quality content consistently will get you traffic and will in turn allow you to start monetizing your blog faster. I had a blog before this one and I was able to start making money from that blog within the first two months. This was when Pinterest first started becoming big in 2011. I posted something on my site that went viral on Pinterest and was instantly getting around 20,000 page views a day. This led to me put Adsense ads on my site that made me money daily. It may not happen that quickly for everyone. It’s very important to be patient if it isn’t happening for you. Just be sure not to get discouraged, keep posting and don’t give up!
How Much do Bloggers Make
One thing you may be wondering is how much money bloggers make. This is a valid question that most people wonder when first starting a blog. The amount of money bloggers make varies. I blog and have an online store. I make a six figure income from both combined. Some bloggers are making well over a million while others are just making a little extra money. If you want to earn a really good income, it is very important to treat your blog as a business. If you treat your blog as a hobby, you will only ever make hobby money. For some people a little extra money every month is perfectly fine with them and they only blog as a side hustle.
Ways to make money blogging
There are lots of different ways to make money blogging. When figuring out the best ways to monetize your blog, you will want to make sure that it fits your niche and works for your blog. For example, I only use monetization methods that won’t hurt user experience or alienate my readers. I also only promote products and services that I have used and love. You shouldn’t use a monetization method that isn’t appropriate for your audience. This is what has worked for me and this is the advice that I give to new bloggers. You want what you promote to feel authentic. Otherwise, your readers will question your ethics.
Advertising (Ad Networks, Selling Ads, Sponsored Blog Posts, Sponsored Social Media Posts)
Display Ads – Ad Networks & Selling Ads
One way to make money blogging is through advertising. There a bunch of different types of advertising. The first type of advertising is display ads which you can get through ad networks and selling your own ads. Display ads are the image and text ads that you see on sites that are often in the sidebar, in the header of the site and more commonly are displayed in the blog content. You can get display ads from ad networks such as Google Adsense, MediaVine and CafeMedia. You can also sell your own display ads. I have used ad networks and sold my own ads. I prefer to use ad networks for my ads over selling my own ad space. The reason being is that I’m just one person and I’m limited with my time. When you sell your own ads, you have to negotiate the ad rate and keep up with invoices. I found that I don’t have time for this. I rather just put up the ad code on my site and have an ad network take care of everything else. This frees up my time for the more important things that I need to focus on like growing my business.
Sponsored Blog Posts
Sponsored blog posts are a great way to make money from your blog. A sponsored post is when a company pays you to write a post about their product. The post may be as simple as writing a product review or it may be a more involved editorial piece. For example, if you post DIY projects a company may ask you to use their product in one of your projects and show your audience how to create the project. Just be sure you are only accepting sponsored posts from brands that align with your blog’s content. Otherwise, the post will feel inauthentic.
Sponsored Social Media Posts
Sponsored social media posts are another great way to monetize your blog. A sponsored social media post is when a company pays you to write a social media post about their product. When the company pays you to do the sponsored post, they will outline your obligations of the post. This may include which social media channels you must post on, how many times you have to post and what the post needs to include. As with sponsored blog posts, it’s always a good idea to only accept sponsored posts from brands that align with your brand.
Affiliate marketing is when you promote a company’s product and you are paid when someone clicks through your affiliate link and buys the product. You will make a commission from that sale. The company whose product you are promoting will give you a unique link that is used to track your sales. You will use these links throughout your posts when you are talking about the product.
These are some of the companies that I use and am affiliate of:
Some companies will make you apply and get approved for their affiliate program while others will just make you sign up. Some companies will also not approve you until you have a certain amount of traffic. Be sure to check the requirements of the affiliate company that you are signing up for to make sure that you meet them.
Selling Physical Products
Another way to make money blogging is to sell your own products. This is a little more involved then just posting blog posts. You will need to have an online shop such as Shopify or Woocommerce. I have used both of these and would recommend both. These two platforms are great ways to get an online shop up and running quickly. Some types of products that you can sell are art prints, mugs, t-shirts, pillows, hoodies and pillows. There are two product fulfillment companies that I have worked with and would recommend. I have used Printful and Printed Mint. They are both great fulfillment companies that print your products on demand so that you don’t need to have a warehouse and product in stock. I plan on writing a more detailed post in the future that outlines how to create your own products.
Selling Digital Products
Selling digital products is a great way to make money blogging and is a lot less involved than selling a physical product. I sell digital download products on my site and on Etsy. Selling digital products is very hands off which I like. I can create a product, post it for sale and set it up so that when the product is purchased the download link automatically gets set to the customer. Some digital products that you can sell include ebooks, graphics, printables, online courses, templates and blog themes.
You can also make money blogging by selling services. There are a lot of different services that you can sell. Some examples of services that can be sold are blog coaching, web design, brand design or business coaching. I have never sold any of my services because this is something that I don’t have time to do. However, this may be a great option for some people.
I hope this post has given you some insight on how to make money blogging. As you can can there are many ways to make money blogging. I recommend focusing a couple of different ways so that you are diversifying your income. If you have any questions about anything in this post, be sure to leave a comment.
