How to Resize Free Printables

January 20, 2017

One of the questions that I get asked the most is if we offer our free printable wall art in different sizes. We only offer them in size 8×10 because you can easily resize the files yourself to make larger and smaller art prints. I’m going to show you how to resize free printables to make them the size that you need. Just follow the step-by-step tutorial below to resize the files.

How to Resize Free Printables to Make Large Wall Art

Large art prints can make a big impact on your decor. You won’t be able to print the larger sizes at home since most home printers can only print up to 11×17. I like to get my larger sized posters printed at FedEx Office. They have an easy to use online printing system. You can upload your image to their website and they will print out your order. Fed Ex will either ship it to you or you can pick it up from the location closest to you.

The first thing you need to do to make the file larger is open the file in Adobe Reader. If you don’t have Adobe Reader, you can get it for free here.

Once you have the file open in Adobe Reader, increase the view percentage to 800%.

Then go to the edit menu at the top. Then go down to take a snapshot.

Right click your mouse on the image to bring up the selection menu and choose Select All.

Then right click again on the selected image and click copy selected graphic. This will copy the image to your clipboard.

Now all you need to do is open the free image editor on your computer. On a mac, it’s called Preview. On a PC, you can use Paint. Since I have a Mac, I’m going to be showing you how to do it in Preview.

Open Preview then go to the file menu in Preview then down to New from Clipboard. This will create a new image in Preview from the image that you copied in Adobe Reader.

Lastly, save this new image as a JPEG file. Make sure you choose to save it as the best quality.

Basically all you are doing through the steps above is blowing the PDF image up to a larger size, copying it to your clipboard, pasting it into a free photo editor, and saving is as a high quality JPEG file. Once you have the file saved, you can upload it into any printing service and have the file printed as a large poster size.

How to Resize Free Printables to Make Smaller Wall Art

Alternatively, you may want to make the free printables smaller sizes. For example you may want them to be 5×7 or 4×6 for smaller frames. It’s very easy to make them smaller and print them at home. You can resize the printing size through the printing settings in Adobe Reader.

First, find the free printable that you want to print and open it in Adobe Reader.

Then go to file on the toolbar and then down to print.

When the print dialogue box opens up, click on page setup.

You are going to create a custom print size for the size you want to print. I’m going to create a 5×7 custom size. I’m on a Mac, so my windows may look a little different if you are doing this on a PC. Please note that you only need to make the custom sizes if your printer doesn’t have this size as an option. Also, you’ll only need to create the custom size once. Once you’ve created the size you’ll be able to choose it next time you want to print that size.

Click on paper size.

Then go down to manage custom sizes.

Then click the plus sign to add the custom size.

I changed the size to 5×7 with zero for all the margins since I want this to print all the way to the edge.

After you create the custom size and select it, change the scaling so that the image fills the whole 5×7 space. You’ll see what it looks like in the print preview in Adobe.

Press print.

I’d love to see what you make! Please follow us on Instagram and tag us.

  • I've been absent from social media for quite some time now. It's hard at times being a one woman business and trying to do everything. I realized this year that I was burnt out. Running an online store and creating content proved to be very difficult to keep up with. I'm back now and I feel refreshed and ready to get back to creating content that y'all love. I launched a brand new Chicfetti.com. Bringing back memberships was something that was highly requested, so I made that happen. Also, all of our 600+ free printables and svg files are all in one place! Your feedback is very important to me and y'all are the reason I do what I do. I would love to hear what you think! Feel free to leave a comment or dm me 💕, Jenny
