If you spend any time on Pinterest or read any crafting blogs, then you may already be familiar with printable files. If you aren’t familiar with printables then this post will explain what they are and how to use printable files. Printables come in many forms and can either be for free or for purchase. I see them as a great way to craft, decorate and organize your life!
How to Use Printable files – what they are
A printable is a downloadable PDF file or JPG file that is commonly printed on paper on a home printer. A printable can be anything that can be printed on a printer. Common printable files include printable wall art, printable party decorations, printable wedding decorations, printable wedding invitations, printable party invitations, printable party banners, printable planner inserts and printable labels.
Recommended Printer for Printable Files
I love the Canon Pixma iP8720. The reason why I love this printer is because it makes high quality color prints. It prints up to 13″x19″ for making larger poster sized prints. It also has wireless printing and AirPrint. This printer is what Canon considers their crafting printer. It’s great for printing any crafting related paper items. It’s also great for every day use.
The Canon Pixma iP8720 printer is an inkjet printer. I would recommend an inkjet printer instead of a color laser printer. This printer will print full sheet. This means that you can print all the way to the edge of the paper. I have never been able to find a color laser printer that can print all the way to the edge of the paper. There will always be a 1/4″ white edge around laser printed images.
Paper Recommendation for Printable Files
Almost every file that you print will work best printed on white cardstock paper. If you are printing an art print, you may want to print it on glossy photo paper. It really depends what look you want. If you are printing planner inserts, then you would want to print on regular text weight printer paper. Since the most common size for printable files is 8.5″x11″, you will want to get paper that is that size. Some other sizes may include 5″x7″, 8″x10″ and 11″x17″. You would be able to print every size except for the 11″x17″ on 8.5″x11″ paper. There is no need to buy different paper sizes. You can just use one size and then trim them down with a paper trimmer so that you will have the size that you need. I find that this is what works best.
Where to Get Printable Files Printed
You can have the files printed at any office supply store if you don’t own a printer. We suggest going to FedEx office or another office store that offers printing. You can use the computers there, enter in your own text and have them printed. If the printable file can be saved, then you could edit the file on your own computer, save the file and then send it to the office supply store to print. Some office supply stores also allow you to upload your file to their online system for printing and pickup.
Editable Printable Files
Some of our printable files are editable. This means that when you open the file in Adobe Reader the highlighted text can be edited to your own text. You must use Adobe Reader to edit the text on our editable printable files. Adobe Reader is a free program that can be downloaded on your computer. It’s available for both Mac and PC. You will be able to edit the font, style, size and color of the text in Adobe Reader. In order to do this, you need to pull up the editing palette in Adobe Reader which you can do by pressing Command-E on a Mac or Ctrl-E on a PC. You need to edit the file on a desktop computer for best results. We don’t recommend editing the files on a mobile device or tablet. Even though Adobe Reader has an app that you can download for your device, the app doesn’t work the same as the computer program. It doesn’t have the same editing capabilities and you won’t be able to edit the font size, style or color.
Printable File Printing Settings
Something that is very important to note is that when you print the files that you make sure page scaling is set to 100%. Adobe Reader usually defaults to fit to page. This can be problematic when printing something that needs to be a particular size. For example, a 5″x7″ sign that will automatically fit to an 8.5″x11″ page. You don’t want the sign to fit to your 8.5″x11″ sheet of paper. By choosing to set page scaling to 100%, it will ensure that the file will print as a 5″x7″ on an 8.5″x11″ sheet of paper.
Also be sure to choose the correct paper type for the paper you are using. If you are printing on sticker or label paper, you should choose that setting in the print options.
