If you’re into planning (#plannergirl), you know that it can get expensive! I can walk into Michaels and intend on only buying a couple of things and end up blowing my whole budget on planning supplies. Anyone else with me? If you’re on a tight budget, you can still plan and get the supplies that you want. This post is going to share some tips for planning on a budget.
Coupons are your best friends if you are planning on a budget. Joanns, Michaels and Hobby Lobby all have weekly coupons. If you have a smart phone, you can download their apps and access the coupons directly through the app. You don’t need to print out the coupons and take them into the store. All you have to do is show the cashier the coupon on your phone and they can scan it right on your phone. How easy is that? If you don’t have a smart phone, you can go into the store and have them sign you up for their direct mailing program. Signing up for their mailing programs will have the coupons mailed directly to your home. If you do have a smart phone, I still recommend signing up for the direct mailing program. Their policy says one coupon per purchase. However, they will scan multiple coupons in one purchase. You can use the coupons on your phone and the ones that you receive in the mail. Joanns and Michaels will also take competitor coupons. If one store is having a better deal than the other, feel free to use the best coupon.
Watch for Sales
You can access the sales flyers for Joanns, Michaels and Hobby Lobby through their apps and online. Be sure to watch the sales! I cannot stress that enough. A couple months ago Michaels had a sale where all their planner supplies were 50% off. I was also able to use a coupon for 20% off my whole purchase as the coupon included sale and regular priced items. I was able to get a lot of the Happy Planner sticker books at an incredible discount and I stocked up on washi tape at the same time.
Buy an Older Planner
I had a reader message me the other day to tell me that she saved a lot of money by buying an older planner. She didn’t love the cover, but she followed our make your own planner covers tutorial and made a cover that she loved. The 18 month Happy Planners run from July to December. These planners get heavily discounted leading up to the release of the newer 12 month planners in October every year. I was at Joanns the other day and saw the 18 month planners marked down to $2.99. That’s an insane deal! They are practically giving them away. There is nothing wrong with the 18 month planners. They do have extra months that you won’t need since those months already passed. But, you can easily remove those months from your planner and it will be like you just bought a 12 month planner. You may be limited on the planner that you can buy depending on what is left, but you can customize your planner to make it a planner that you love.
Free printables are a great way to customize your planners and save money. There are so many sites that share free planner printables. Just go onto Pinterest and search free planner printables. If you don’t have a good printer for printing out printables, this the printer that I recommend. If a printer isn’t in your budget, then be sure to save up and budget for one. I save more money over time by printing out my own supplies at home. I can easily customize my planner by printing out my own planner inserts, planner covers and planner stickers. Most of the time all you need is a printer, cardstock paper and full sheet sticker paper to create anything you want for your planner.
